How do i go about getting the original building plans for my house?

I live in NH and am concerned that my house was not built to code in 1986, i need to get information concerning the building codes of that year, and the actual blueprints of my house

any tips out there?

Somehow people think there is a place where all home blueprints are kept. There is no such place. The county/City could not physically store all these prints. Now in very large Cities and Counties, their building inspection depts might review the prints during the permit process, but I doubt that they keep them.
I don't know what good they will do you, because many things are changed right before/during a home being built. You would need (as built) prints, which are usually never completed except in commercial/industrial projects.
Sometimes you can get all caught up in paperwork when all you need to do is have the appropriate contractor (electrical, masonry, hvac, plumbing) come out and see what code violations are current.
If you are thinking of retroactive action against the builder/developer, you can forget that.
If you were not given a set of blueprints when you bought this house - you probably are not going to find any. Now if this is a large Custom built home 4,000 sq ft or larger - you may be lucky to find the architect and he/she may have a set on file, but that is a slim chance.
Don't worry about the codes in 1986 as there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Just bite the bullet and make the changes needed to make it safe and efficient for you now.
in most counties you might be able to go to your town hall to the building dept. they should have all the permits and specs for your building! they might have a small charge for this svc.
You have to ask the person who built the house. Even if it wasn't built to code the statute of limitations ran out a long time ago.
