Shirley Bassey – Moonraker (Superfunk Remix)

Probably one of the most bizarre, if not THE most bizarre remix ever produced by a labeled French House act: In 2000, Superfunk were commissionned to remix the theme of 'Moonraker', 11th James Bond film (1979). One might have expected a complete French House revamp. After all, if you had listened to 'Hold Up' by then (the first album by Superfunk) and all their remixes of that period, you would have expected something like that... or not far from that. BUT... Superfunk did the total opposite of what they were known for. They took a minimal amount of vocals from Shirley Bassey, looped an orchestral part, put a very basic downtempo beat on top of it, a few samples from the NASA. And... that was it. When the producers of the compilation heard the remix, they rejected it from the official tracklist of the album. Nobody really knows if it was a joke or not. One thing for sure: it wasn't what they expected from the French trio (Fafa Monteco left not long after). You can still find this remix on a few versions of 'Diamonds Are Forever: The Remix Album', but not all. Just like my video for 'Walk 4 Me' by The Eternals, I decided to look for the NASA samples and identify them. The vocal samples included here are quite famous: they are from the first lunar landing (1969). You will hear, in order, Neil Armstrong, the president of the USA in 69, Mr. Richard Nixon, and finally Buzz Aldrin. My opinion is mixed up: when I first heard this remix on Napster, more than 10 years ago, I ...

Reading these post are funny. This is about the only mix on that album I return to and to be honest this counts up there with some of the best ambient dance tracks I have. No its not a standard French dance track but a part of dance music moved away from things to throw your body around to way back in the very early 80′s and it’s not stoppped since. I count this up there witn satelite serenade and thats a ground breaking track for me.

Bonjour Fafa.
Tu peux consulter ce remix – plutôt standard – sur mon poste You Tube.

Let me explain :) When i’ve been asked to rmx this song, i was to get the parts but finally EMI told me that they were lost. I wasn’t hot to rmx it without the parts, i would have to traffic it a lot, so i decided to “play” with it and i imagined a moon story betw Shirley asking from earth “Where are you…” to the guys who were landing on the moon, and them answering to her. A kind of “Clouds across the moon” betw Shirley, Neil & Buzz, in a electronica downtempo way. I thought it funny :)

We can understand the producers… Why to spoil an original good song ?

@troysson81 I have no idea. But as I say in the description of the video, I think the original disco version could be easily extended and updated with a few minor modifications. I believe it’s a very good track.

That trebble is tough to crank the volume on, but what a jam. I think this is one of the best tracks on the album.

This is nice and all… but does a proper French House remix exist?
