the feds recently passed a bill that gives the government control of the textbook companies, which in turn control what we learn. the government now chooses which textbooks we use, the price of textbooks and also the content wthin them. the common conspiracy is that they are making us less intelligent so they can get us to vote for a socialist society…..just think national healthcare, where have we seen that before…….

we”ll end up just like canada…..

in this video: how to speak for 6 minutes without saying anything.

charter schools mr obama, the answer is staring you in the face.

competition for funds is a step in the right direction, but i thought you wanted to ‘race’ to the top, not slowly stumble there.

Watching this whole video i realized he didn’t really say anything.. It was all politics, saying that the education of our children is important and he talked about what use to make us great but not what is going to make us great again or what we are going to do about it. He really only put forth one thing that they plan to do to fix this, overhauling no child left behind.. hoo fucking raaw.. we’re all saved..

Reward good schools not bad ones, make them compete for their funding. SCHOOL CHOICE!

I think he misses the point with better schools, I believe all that is really needed are good teachers, as a student I have seen first hand what a bad teacher can do to good equipment. Some of our good teachers were hired away and replaced by crap ones. Between the teachers they had the same facilities at their disposal, But the difference was in the teacher. Also over specific rules and drug dogs going around school doesn’t help school spirit, it makes it seem like us vs them not a community.

@profjunk Bro, I believe that most folks believe they don’t have to use English on the Internet, because of anonymity. They do this on purpose.

or at least provide a system through which the parents, not bureacreats have the power to decide what type of education their children receives.

The new deal didn’t do anything to get the US out of the Great Depression. If anything it just pushed us further into the depression. This is borne out by the fact that in 1936 the small increase prompted by the New Deal caused a second dip in the economy which pushed the economy further down than it had been previously. Private incentives, like using parents wishes, are a much better way of improving education and everything else in the economy, not goverment handouts.

Without the help of parents, kids can’t reach the excellence that should be right at their fingertips. We can’t expect an idea like this. We need to repair the American Family, and I don’t think a legislative bill can do that.

  13. mbhcimlay says:

I honestly think the change must come from people like me, with my growing family, who can make individual choices to strengthen the family. I am the father who can put my kids in a position where excellence is the norm. I am the one who can take responsibility for the next generation. I think Obama should challenge all American parents to do the same.

  14. mbhcimlay says:

Many American families have fathers who are addicted to pornography, or who just don’t give their kids the needed discipline, guidance or support. At the same time they have mothers who have to work full time to meet the rent, or who are maybe a little too worried about the media’s presentation of what their bodies should look like, etc. The list is too expansive for a short post, but there exists a general weakness to our families that cannot be fully compensated by a good teacher.

  15. mbhcimlay says:

I think the statement about teachers being most responsible for a child’s success glosses over a flaw larger than our current education system. The biggest flaw of American education (elementary and secondary) is the American family behind it all. Our families have degenerated so much since the mentioned ‘golden age’. Parents no longer accept the responsibility for their individual children to see that they are learning the most that they possibly can.

If overseas $ can be now used to back American political campaigns, does that mean I can now donate $ to the Obama campaign?
(As a concerned citizen of the world?) NZer.

  17. kotare2010 says:

Obama’s done his homework! Research does show teacher’s are the main influence on a child’s progress educationally. Good to hear the administration is going to respect and support them.

@everyone, if this is really the official channel of the whitehouse on You Tube, then guess what, they have been engaging in censorship and removal of comments this abridging freedom of speech. That freedom of speech may not apply to online opinions, it does tell me we might possibly have corrupted officials in the Executive branch with their own bogus agenda. 1st sign is the censorship and removal of comments.
